Insane Killer Sudoku

Ok, a few regular readers have requested an INSANE Killer Sudoku puzzle so I had to respond. This puzzle should be very difficult to solve. In fact, it might require some trial&error attempts to be solved. Do not attempt to solve this puzzle unless you are willing to accept that! Click on the puzzle thumbnail to access the puzzle.

Hanjie book released in Denmark

Hanjie puzzles are spreading around the world. Forlaget SuDoku, a publisher from Denmark has released a Hanjie book in which I am a co-author along with Svend Høgh. The book contains 126 Hanjie puzzles. It is published in Denmark only.

A Hanjie-Sudoku hybrid puzzle!

Here is another very special puzzle – it’s an odd/even Sudoku puzzle but it also has clues on top and on the side, just the same as in Hanjie puzzles. This puzzle was provided by Clagu, our regular visitor from Korea. Thank you Clagu, it seems like a nice idea! Here are the rules: Hanjie clues (on top and on the side) give you the arrangement of odd numbers in that particular row/column. Note that the sum of Hanjie clues for each row and column is precisely 5 – that’s how many odd numbers there are between 1 and 9. 🙂 So, use those clues to mark (shade or however else you want to do it) cells that must contain ODD numbers. When you’ve done that, solve the puzzle as you would normally solve an odd/even Sudoku puzzle. Update: The puzzle provided by Clagu was invalid in more than one way. There was a problem with the Hanjie clues which was corrected, but then it turned out that the puzzle had two solutions. Sorry folks. When I get some time I will generate one such puzzle and post it.

Butterfly Killer Samurai Sudoku (#3 I think)

Weekend Special: Butterfly Samurai Killer Sudoku with diagonal cages! This puzzle consists of 20 (twenty) 9×9 Sudoku sub-puzzles. There are 5 groups of 4 puzzles. Each group of 4 is arranged Butterfly-style, and those 5 groups are arranged Samurai-style. Please make sure you understand how the puzzles are arranged before attempting to solve the puzzle. Also, be careful when solving this one – with diagonally adjacent cells it’s sometimes easy to miscount the number of cells in a cage and if you do that, you get the cage-sum combinations completely wrong! Computer-generated Hanjie puzzle

I have just implemented a random Hanjie puzzle generator. It generates valid Hanjie (griddlers, pic-a-pix) puzzles but with random patterns – there is no pretty picture in the end! So, if you just like solving Hanjies and don’t care about the picture that you get in the end, this one is for you! If you folks show interest in these, I may start posting Daily Hanjie puzzles (randomly generated). IMPORTANT: Unlike this random puzzle, ALL Hanjie Griddlers Nonograms puzzles in my puzzle books are HAND-MADE and reveal an IMAGE when solved. Click on the puzzle thumbnail to access the puzzle.

Daily Consecutive/Non-consecutive puzzles

Well, it’ time to revive the “Daily Sudoku variants” page. First of all, that page has been renamed to “(Non)consecutive”. Since this variation of Sudoku puzzles has proven to be more popular than odd/even and greater/less than, I have decided to give you one such puzzle every day, Monday to Friday. Hardest puzzles (IQ/Insane) will be posted Mondays and easiest puzzles will be posted on Fridays, to balance out the difficulty of Daily Killer Sudoku puzzles. I hope you will enjoy these puzzles too!

Clueless Killer Sudoku #3

A while ago I posted 2 Clueless Killer Sudoku puzzles and for the second one I suggested that you shouldn’t attempt to solve it. Well here is another puzzle of the same kind. I won’t make any suggestions this time – I hope you will enjoy the puzzle. 🙂 Again, thanks to Ruud from www.sudocue.net for inventing the “clueless” concept. Unlike Samurai Sudoku, in this puzzle there are 9 Sudoku puzzles with no overlapping regions! If you attempt to solve them individually – you won’t get far. Here is where the “clueless” part comes in: in all of those 9 puzzles, the center nonet is just one cage. As you plug in your numbers, center nonets (shaded in grey) start filling up. The trick is that those 9 center nonets, put together, also constitute a valid Sudoku puzzle. So, when you run out of ideas, start working on the 10th puzzle and it will give you enough information to solve the whole lot. Those 10 puzzles together have, of course, a single solution. Clueless Killer Sudoku for Monday, February 19, 2007 – this is the only place you can find this kind of Sudoku puzzles! Click on the puzzle thumbnail to access the puzzle.

Griddlers

Ok, this time I will show you a hanjie puzzle that is relatively straightforward until halfway through the puzzle you come to a point where you have to use one advanced solving technique. It will be explained in detail in the next few days. Until then – try to solve it yourself! UPDATE: There is actually no need to use this “advanced” technique to solve this puzzle (altho it can be used). I missed one simple step which can be used instead. So, the puzzle is not so difficult after all. Sorry about that. By the way, the solution is one symbol of zodiac; which one – it’s up to you to find out. 🙂 15×15 Hanjie (griddlers) puzzle for November 1, 2006 Click on the puzzle thumbnail to access the puzzle.
