KILLER Samurai

At long last, I just uploaded my first ever Killer Samurai Sudoku. As all our other puzzles – it’s PERFECT ;). Why: 1. It has one and only one solution. If you claim differently – triple check all the rules that apply. 2. This solution can be found by logic only – no trial and error is needed. 3. It’s symmetrical. (Killers are 2-way symmetrical, while other overlapping puzzles can be made 4-way or 2-way symmetrical) 4. There are no singleton cages. This puzzle should take you through the weekend. Let me know how difficult you find it. UPDATE: I moved the puzzle and attached it to this message. Click on the puzzle thumbnail to access the puzzle.
Killer Sudoku Samurai: 65 puzzles (Volume 1)

Killer Sudoku for Italian readers

There is a new website for Killer Sudoku puzzles in Italian language – KillerSudoku.it. I will be providing some puzzle for this site – actually they will repost some of the puzzles that have been previously shown on our site. I wish them good luck and I hope they build a nice Italian Killer Sudoku community there :).

Twin Nonets

Lets formalize the technique that can be used when solving overlapping puzzles, which I have been referring to as “the new solving technique” and that I now call Twin Nonets. Basically, this technique is a sub-technique (or if you like – a consequence) of the naked/hidden triplets technique that you are all probably aware of. But, naked/hidden triplets are sometimes difficult to spot and this is very obvious once you realize what it’s all about. The technique only applies to overlapping puzzles where two sub-puzzles overlap on at least two nonets. So it doesn’t apply to puzzles like Samurai. It applies to Flower Sudoku, Butterfly Sudoku, Double Sudoku, Triple Sudoku and other puzzles that I have posted before. So after all this talk lets get to the point. Here is the first Double Trouble X that I posted a while ago: Twin Nonets The nonets highlighted in red are twin nonets. This means that 3 triplets that constitute each nonet must contain the same numbers as in the matching triplet in the twin nonet (not always in the same order). So, the cells that are marked with a red “x” must be 8 and 9 respectively. Why? Because in the matching triplets we have those numbers so they must be there and there is only one spot where they can fall into. What’s also important to know is that you can use this rule to eliminate candidates from a cell. I’m using the same example. Look at the left triplets of the highlighted nonets. In the bottom red nonet, there is number 1 in the left triplet. Therefore, this number must be somewhere in the left triplet of the top red nonet, which means that it can be eliminated as a candidate from the middle triplet of the top red nonet! I know this now looks obvious, but sometimes it’s easy to miss. For example, in the Triple X puzzle that I posted before, it’s difficult to see this (see the comments bellow Triple X post). In double trouble X puzzles there are 4 pairs of twin nonets. I showed you one and I’m sure that you can see what other three are. However, because this is an “X” puzzle, there is another Twin Triplets pair and it’s on the long diagonal (12 cells). The three cells from nonet 1 and the three cells from the bottom-right nonet must contain the same numbers (again – not necessarily in the same order).

No Samurai X today! (again!?)

Instead, a very similar yet different variation – 4 puzzles in an X-Ring. This is not to be confused with the X-Wing solving technique! X-Ring for Saturday, December 03 – this is the only place you can find these kind of Sudoku puzzles! Basically, not only do you have to fight against 4 interconnected Sudokus, but you also need to be carefull about the diagonals: ALL diagonals in the puzzle must contain one occurrence of each 1-9 digit. The diagonals are marked in the puzzle so you wouldn’t forget about them. Click on the puzzle thumbnail to access the puzzle.

Washington Express Samurai number 2

This is just a short reminder that another Samurai puzzle, generated by Perfect Sudoku software, is published in today’s Washington Express newspaper. You can read more about our other releases here

Triple X

Another overlapping sudoku variant – now with 3 Sudoku X puzzles. Warning: This puzzle is quite difficult even that it can be solved using only basic sudoku solving techniques. You must work on all three puzzles in order to get the solution. Also, I think you might get confused about the “fourth” puzzle which you might think exists in the center of the entire puzzle. Well – it doesn’t! The middle 9×9 does not have to be a valid puzzle! Look at the diagonals – they well define which 3 puzzles must be solved. You can use the Twin Nonets technique, too!
